The day after tomorrow is a good SCIENCE-fiction movie with more weight toward the science part. To my opinion, the only fiction in it, is the good ending. I think in the real world, the US will invade to Mexico and then they will slaughter the local population so they will be able to establish a new country. In fact, Mexico will be erased and the United State will be shifted there. Do not say that I am so pessimistic, this had happened many time before, still happening now and can happen again.
